About Barbara
as Melbourne wins the world prize for MOST days in lockdown... I pack up and go
|
Reconnecting with 'The Work' of Byron Katie during one of Melbourne's early lockdowns gave me a tool to question my stressful thoughts and reconnect with joy.
Diving deep into her method gave me the courage to close my home based massage business, convert my Getz to a mini minivan and take all my skills on the road. First stop, Swami's Yoga Retreat in Kenthurst NSW for a spot of karma yoga. |
|
Sanjay, Swami's son welcomed with open arms, even joking that that I might want to stay 3 months, or even 3 years, instead of the required 3 weeks. I giggled but Swami's is now my precious home base.
Swami's Yoga Retreat is a unique place. Volunteers practice karma yoga, exchanging our labour and skills for nourishing food, a place to sleep and community. Paying guests come from around the world, but mainly Sydney, because it's just so close. My favourite new skills: plan and prepare a vegan meal for 40-50 people master of the ride on mower |
Barbara the experienced massage therapist.

I am a fully qualified Remedial Massage Therapist with 25 years in the biz.
Someone recently described a massage from me as 'A perfect combination of relaxation and release of muscle knots' and I think this fits. My goal is to create space that is warm and welcoming for people of all body shapes and sizes I also TEACH people to massage or increase their skills as a practitioner if they are already experienced. Barbara and The Work of Byron Katie
|
I facilitate Byron Katie's 'The Work'.
My unique gift is my ability to infuse my workshops and one/one deep dives, with gentle positivity, creating a space that is both safe and healing. 'The Work' is a transformative practice where you question your thoughts and beliefs, in order to connect with your inner wisdom and find peace. In person and online events happening this year. Hope to see you at one (or more!) You are always welcome to ask questions about what I'm up to and whether or not it might be a fit for you. |
Barbara and Yoga
|
'Yoga' is so much more than just standing on your head.
However, standing on your head is fantastic and teaches us to back ourselves. There are many different versions of this asana (pose), and I look forward to helping all my students find one that is right for their body. Swami's yoga retreat offers Hatha Yoga Teacher Training in Swami Sarasvati's lineage and I've been adding my Barbara Anatomy Geek twist to the program. As a yogi, most of my journey has been within the Iyengar lineage, which has given me a keen ability to pay attention to detail. My crystal clear directions will guide you through each pose with ease and confidence. |
Education & Qualifications
Diploma Remedial Massage (2013 and 2016 upgrade)
Southern School of Natural Therapies (SSNT) in Fitzroy VIC
Although I have been practising as a massage therapist for more than 12 years, I enjoyed bringing my formal qualifications up to meet industry standards.
Certificate IV Training and Assessment (updated in 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2020)
Northern Melbourne Institute of Tafe (NMIT) in Preston VIC
This qualification allows me to teach massage - which I've done regularly at many leading schools in Melbourne including Melbourne Polytechnic (formerly NMIT) , MTI (Max Therapy Institute) and SSNT (Southern School of Natural Therapies)
Graduate Diploma in Education - Science and Health (2007)
University of Melbourne
This qualification allowed me to teach high school, a career path I started to venture down when I was uncertain if staying within the massage/Bowen industry could sustain me (I lasted 18 months before realising my purpose is to serve adults as an educator and therapist)
Practitioners Certificate of Massage Therapies (2000)
Malvern School of Massage & Kinesiology (renamed Copeland College)
Practitioners Certificate of Bowen Therapy (2000)
ISBT (International School of Bowen Therapy)
BSc. Human Movement (1992)
Simon Fraser University (SFU) in British Columbia, Canada
Between 1988-1992 I studied at SFU in Canada majoring in Kinesiology (Human Movement), giving me a solid background in nutrition, biomechanics, ergonomics, anatomy and physiology.
In 1999, while I studying at the Malvern School of Massage & Kinesiology I became aware of the Australian modality called Bowen Therapy. I had the privilege of training directly with Lisa Black and Col Murray, the founding directors of ISBT.
After completing both qualifications in 2000, I started my clinical practice.
