Intro to ISBT-Bowen Therapy
A face to face course to give you a new technique for your clinical practice
ISBT-Bowen therapy is best described as a dynamic fascial and muscle release modality. This gentle Australian technique consists of a series of single, gentle cross-fibre Bowen 'moves' applied to specific muscles, tendons and ligaments. By improving the flow of blood and lymph, these sequences create self-correcting structural changes and promote overall body balance.
The International School of Bowen Therapy (ISBT) was founded in 1998 in Australia with the intention of presenting quality professional courses that were geared towards providing students with the best possible avenue of learning and developing effective skills.
ISBT graduates are using this unique Australian technique in public hospitals (Hong Kong) which has sparked interest for further clinical trials in New Zealand. ISBT training has been formally incorporated into Masters of Physiotherapy Degree Program (Portugal). ISBT graduates are proposing and carrying out research and presenting their results at International events (International Fascia Research Congress, VA 2015).
As you know, it's hard to get 'proof' that a soft tissue modality like remedial massage works, never mind solid scientific evidence as to mechanism. But this is changing as ISBT-Bowen is embraced by physiotherapists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, general practitioners, naturopaths, osteopaths and heilpraktikerin in countries like Germany, Portugal, Brasil, Hong Kong and New Zealand.
In Australia, ISBT-Bowen is available to Remedial Massage Therapists as a technique they can add to their toolbox without massive changes to your insurance. As a RMT myself, I'm on a mission to raise the profile of this gentle, effective approach so YOU and YOUR CLIENTS can benefit.

Intro to ISBT-Bowen
a face to face course to give you a new technique for your clinical practice
In this Introductory Course you will...
- learn how to perform a Bowen 'move' accurately and effectively
- develop your hand skills to so you can implement your new technique in your clinical practice immediately
- become confident using ISBT-Bowen protocols to alleviate low back pain, sciatica, wry neck and adhesive capsulitis (frozen shoulder)
And here's some words from Jacqui
Jacqui volunteered to be "my body" when I needed to demonstrate everything that YOU will learn in my intro course.
I asked her to write about her experience so that you could hear first hand how YOU can help someone with what you learn with me in my intro course.
I had the pleasure of being a Bowen Therapy model today (referring to myself as a model is a first. I like it! haha).
I was quickly reminded of how gentle, relaxing, unobtrusive and effective it is! I'm someone who is prone to internalising stress and anxiety, sometimes without being consciously aware of it and I also sit a desk all day. Resulting in lots of neck and shoulder pain and a rotated pelvis with tightness and pain down my right side.
After today's treatment I felt instant relief and relaxation. It's so immediate, it's a little hard to comprehend. It makes me a little teary feeling the difference and describing it here.
We did a range of motion test of my arms before and after which was amazing. After the treatment I could move my arms with so much ease, they just glided on up without any effort, straining or getting stuck. Oh my goodness! I also had a lot more freedom of movement of my neck and shoulders. I could feel an immediate improvement in circulation of my right arm. Before the treatment I would feel pins and needles, tightness and strain (arms and shoulder) and even during the treatment (standing treatment, supported by another person - a fellow model for the day) I could feel the pins and needles ease and disappear.
After the treatment on my lower back, I felt much more balanced and even on my feet and standing felt much more comfortable and easy.
I've had Massage, Osteopathy, Physiotherapy and Chiropractic treatment and nothing seem to bring the relief and relaxation than Bowen Therapy has for me. I'm not concerned that the treatment is going to hurt or feel too strong on my neck and shoulders because it is so gentle. I can trust, relax and breath through the treatment without preparing myself for and trying to relax under deep tissue work."

Training with Me, Barbara Swiatkiwsky
I've been using ISBT-Bowen therapy as my primary modality since 1999. I absolutely love how effectively it creates change for my clients without bruising or excessive discomfort. It is such a joy to help people move more comfortably and love their active lives again.
I've got lots of qualifications - BSc. in Human Movement, Dip Rem Massage, Dip Ed and TAE... but in my heart I feel like a remedial massage therapist with a specialty in Bowen. I'm proud to be part of AAMT and delighted that as a professional association we recognize this amazing Australian technique as a valuable massage modality. |
I've run a successful clinical practice from home for over 15 years. And as you know, in this industry, that's a long time.
ISBT-Bowen is gentle on me, the practitioner. Even though it's done in sequences, it's not a mindless application of moves. I'm always thinking, palpating and adjusting my treatment so my clients get the very best result. |
Just like massage schools, different Bowen schools have different strengths. I love anatomy. I love precision. I love research and I'm curious about cellular and biomechanical explanations for soft tissue work. ISBT is perfectly aligned with my values. They don't teach moves just because Tom Bowen did it that way. They explore. They work with researchers. It's exciting to be a teacher for them.
